The Gulf Oil Rig Disaster

I have been fascinated by this event since it happened late last month. Since I work in the chemical manufacturing industry, I don't have much working knowledge about the oil industry.(Even though my parent company is a global oil and gas based company)

If you've been reading this blog at all, you know that I am pursuing a career in Occupational Safety and Health. I tend to read about disasters to try to learn what happened to contribute to the overall event. The Chemical Safety Board website (http://www.csb.gov/) is a great site for past investigations on industrial accidents with videos that describe various events. I don't think the CSB will be involved with this particular disaster, so I had to go to other sources for information. If anyone that visits this blog is interested, a website that is dedicated to the state of the oil, gas and energy industry has some really great information about this particular disaster among other things. Visit http://www.theoildrum.com/ to get a thorough possible explanation of the rig explosion. A detailed discussion takes place about the response efforts, as well.

It's been a pretty long time since my last post. September of last year to be exact. What kind of shit is that? Well, I've been too lazy to post any of my thoughts here. Besides, when I constantly troll around on Tigerdroppings.com and post my thoughts there, what is left? I have an finite amount of wisdom to impart. Therefore I don't want to waste it too much on this blog. TD is the place where I can gain acceptance by being clever, which is something I do NOT have very much talent at.(Being clever that is.)

I am about 12 credit hours away from attaining my Masters in Occupational Safety and Health. I can finally see the perverbial 'Light at the end of the tunnel.' I am looking forward to that final assessment in my final class. I'm hoping to finish before the end of this year. If I can take two courses at a time when I complete this one, then I can finish by August or September. At that point, I'll break out the Crown Royal XR that I have just for that occasion!

I had knee surgery last July. Believe it or not, the recovery was the best part of it. I was off of work for about 4 weeks and was spoiled rotten by the time I returned. Getting paid for staying home is WAY underrated. I decided, during this time, that I needed to get my fat ass in shape. I finally started walking daily with Mrs. Purpletiger during my recovery time. I started cutting back what I was eating and before I knew it, I'd lost close to 30 pounds. I'm now in the maintaining period of weight loss and I have never felt healthier. I'm sleeping better and my knees are not getting battered daily by all that fat. BTW, the W&J diet, 'Eat Less and Move around More' works wonders. I did not make a major change in my diet, I just eat less. What a concept, huh? My lazy ass finally got off of the couch and did something and now I feel great. I hope I can keep it up. It's nice to go shopping for new clothes because your old ones are too big.

...and where am I? At freakin' work, is where I am! Imagine that. Me...at work.

This is a trend that has steadily trudged along for the better part of 8 years now. I'm close to pulling out all of my hair. I am consistantly missing all kinds of events for my kids and family. Not to mention all of the good games this year happen on weekends that I'm supposed to work. I've had to schedule vacation for the Florida game and make a swap for the weekend we play Alabama, which happens to be the same weekend that my 20 year reunion is happening.

Getting my Masters Degree becomes more and more important to me with each event that I've been missing out on. By this time next year I'll have that MS in Occupational Safety and Health and hopefully have some additional career opportunities available to me. My current course that I am enrolled is called: "Advanced Industrial Hygiene" What the Hell? I haven't even muddled through the remedial version of this course, and I have to finish an advanced one. I guess getting a master's is supposed to be harder, huh?

Anyone out there reading this please comment or email me. I don't know if I can keep this thing up when no one out there is reading.

Are any of you out there anxiously waiting for football season to begin? I know that I can't wait until the Tigers kick-off against Washington on the 5th. I don't know what I'm going to do with little miss purple tiger, because she usually gets tired and goes to bed around 9:30 on the weekends. My wife and I were thinking about going to my sister's house to watch the game. I know the little one will want to go see her 'Nannie' that night, so I just might have to take a chance that she'll play with her cousins late into the night. Anyway, to anyone out there reading all I have to say is: GEAUX TIGERS!

BTW, I found this picture while looking at The Smoking Gun website. I thought that I would share it with you. The cops involved were fired for their participation. I sure hope one of those guys got more than a picture for his efforts.

It is freakin' hot here in South Louisiana. To make it worse, it hasn't rained in a couple of weeks, which makes everything that is not normally dry, well...dry. I had to get out this morning to water the plants in the front of the house because Mrs. Purpletiger is worried that they will die. To be quite honest, I wish they would die so that we could do something else with that space. But wait...that would mean I would have to go outside to work on something. Shit on that! I'm enjoying my time off from work, recovering from knee surgery.

I'm having a pretty good time on Tigerdroppings.com as well. Those cats on that site post some pretty funny shit about, well, everything. They talk about LSU stuff, but other things as well. If you haven't gone over there, it is very worth your time.

I know that I haven't posted very much for the last few months, but I hope to get in the groove by writing more.

BTW, GEAUX TIGERS! Take the CWS crown from all of those clowns. Man, I wish I was there!

I was one of those people who, not so long ago, wondered, what benefit could Myspace or Facebook be to me? "Hottest Girls of Myspace," notwithstanding. (Google it, trust me.) Then, I began wondering about my 20 year class reunion. I was struck with a revelation. Kinda like a ton of bricks. (BTW, thanks Tyson for pointing me in the right direction!) Why not try one of the social networking sites.

If you've read previous posts you'll get this next reference. Lo and behold (cue Monty Python animated interlude from "Holy Grail") there are people whom I have completely lost contact with. Even some that do not live very far from me, but with the same issues I have with limited time for contact. I am very pleased to note that all I have to do is click my mouse and I have a friend. Man, is this cool or what? But wait, there is this strange box which I have to type the words EXACTLY as they are written or some sort of error pops up. What the hell? Dude, I thought this 'Friend' thing was supposed to be easy. However, I am just clicking away requesting friends all over the place. Hopefully, I can get off my lazy ass and restore some sort of contact with these people I find truly interesting and intriguing.

If any of you guys are out there reading this, please feel free to comment here and drop me an email. I am forever looking for more than two people to visit this posting per week. If I can increase readership to three, I might even post more often. Please don't let that threat chase you off, though.

I truly miss all of you and wish to talk with each and every one of you whenever possible. I am also excited that I will be able to introduce Mrs. Purple Tiger to all of my friends that I have lost touch with. Hey guys, don't hold it against her that she graduated from St. Amant, she does have some redeeming qualities. She has become a HUGE LSU fan. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, I was able to cultivate a kernal of interest in LSU into a full blown LSU, bleeds purple and gold woman. It can't get much better than that.

Other than she puts up with my bullshite more often than not. Hey, drop me an email and we can talk. I'll try to keep the blog up better in the future.

UPDATE on Previous Post

I have been following the blog from a previous post for some time now. It is absoulutely indescribable what these individuals are going through. To be deployed for 12 to 18 months, become discharged, move on with your life and. . .BOOM! Some envelope shows up on your doorstep to let you know that you still owe them some more time. That is straight up BULLSHIT!!! Those people that signed on the dotted line performed their duty when they deployed. If their enlistment is up, then let them go. This is a crime against the individuals who are performing a service to our country. This is the update that Alex wrote about:

A Man at Sunrise
For the past month I've been writing about my best friend Steve. He had been out of the Army for more than a year before he was ordered to report for medical screening and inevitably a deployment to Iraq. Having done more for his country in three years than the sum of whole organizations (I'm looking at you, College Republicans), Steve was once again called upon to do the work so many have shunned over the last eight years. I am more than relieved to report that today his exemption from involuntary mobilization has been granted and his orders canceled. Many people congratulate you when you get out of the Army like you're getting out of jail, but getting out of the IRR is like leaving purgatory behind. So many congratulations for Steve. Your future is back in your able hands. Now squeeze that GI Bill for all its worth!

As for the many more veterans in the IRR, I'm not giving up on this plight now that my friend is safe. There are still daily injustices that must be corrected, not only dealing with recall but the other back door draft of stop loss.

Thank you all for your e-mails and comments of support for Steve and others in his unenviable position. I truly appreciate it.

The New Alex Box Stadium

Man, that new stadium looks sweet! I wish I could have attended that game Friday night. I remember going to the old Box with my family at the time when the entire stadium was general admission. Skip had taken over about 2 years before. Little did I know at the time, but we were in for a great ride. During this time in LSU Baseball, they sold 'Family' season tickets. A family of 4 could attend the Friday night game and the Saturday double headers for one price. My dad purchased these tickets for quite a few years, until they made the grandstand at the Box reserved. It priced my dad out of the tickets because he was still buyin season tickets for football.

I have so many memories of the old Box. From Will Clark tagging a home run across Nicholson to Lyle Mouton slamming one on top of the married housing behind left field. It made me sad that I couldn't afford season tickets to LSU Baseball, and I couldn't get tickets to the games this weekend. I will take my family to a game this year somehow. I look forward to watching this team this year.

Keeping the Faith: A Letter to President Obama
Dear President Obama,
This letter comes to you from an unlikely supporter: a young Iraq War vet from the blood-red state of Texas. As an Army recruit in basic training, I cast my vote for George W. Bush in 2004 because I felt he was the best choice for a responsible prosecution of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Five years and a combat tour later, I have come to understand the consequences of that decision. Last November I pulled the lever for you after hearing about the refreshing notion of a new era of government accountability that never existed in my adult life. I was sold when you promised to end the practice of involuntary mobilization, a program that reactivates veterans out of the service and sends them back to war. Given the new era of responsibility ushered in by your administration, it is imperative that you keep a promise made to the tens of thousands of veterans across the country.

I am writing to you on behalf of Steve Lewey, one of Illinois' bravest sons. Steve grew up in a working class family not too far from your old stomping grounds of Chicago. He did well in high school and went on to college to study architectural design. After realizing he and his parents could not afford to continue his education, Steve enlisted in the United States Army at the age of nineteen. He did so not only for education benefits but to satisfy the intense need to serve his country in a time of war. As an infantryman, Steve completed a fifteen month tour in 2007, distinguishing himself in the Battle of Baqubah, the deadliest battle of the surge. In one instance, after an insurgent attack claimed the life of our comrade, Steve completely exposed himself to enemy fighters by climbing on top of a Stryker vehicle and firing at three insurgents, killing them instantly. On a dirty and blood-soaked street in Iraq, no one seemed to notice the kid from Chicago in an act of remarkable gallantry. Many of my fellow soldiers are walking examples of his bravery - without his incredibly selfless act, more American soldiers would have surely fallen in that battle.

With his GI Bill in hand, Steve left the service after an extended combat deployment and headed back home to Chicago in the winter of 2007. Filled with the fire of discipline and motivation he found in the Army, he settled into a job and waited patiently for the new GI Bill to become law. He wanted to finish the schooling he started so many years ago. That dream came to an abrupt end late last month when he came home to find a thick brown envelope on his doorstep. Inside were instructions on where to report for medical screening for a deployment back to Iraq.

The IRR has been used in the past as an emergency pool of trained soldiers to augment forces overseas, but recently history has shown it has been badly abused following 9/11. The link between Iraq and the Global War on Terror is tenuous at best, yet the Presidential Reserve Call Up Authority still exists to mobilize and deploy inactive soldiers even in cases of non-emergencies, Iraq being a clear example. Though repeated and lengthy deployments are causing a terrible strain on active duty soldiers, there was no concern on the part of your colleagues to expand the size of the military to meet the rigorous demand of two wars. Instead, the Department of Defense has overindulged on inactive soldiers meant to fix temporary problems, not become long term solutions. Though you seek to draw down forces in Iraq, Mr. President, the recalls continue in the twilight of a six year war.

For combat veterans, the task of integrating back into society has been a difficult journey as old as war itself. From Odysseus to eighteen year old soldiers coming from the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan, the path to normalcy is wrought with post traumatic stress and a disconnect between soldiers and their civilian counterparts. The added weight of a potential involuntary recall is more undue pressure on the fragile mind of combat veterans. Army career counselors exacerbate the duress with threatening phone calls and ominous visits to the homes of veterans, suggesting recall is a certainty if they don't join the Guard or Reserves. For Steve and over 20,000 inactive soldiers across the country, their worst fears have been realized in the form of mobilization orders. For them it's another crushing defeat in an already burdensome mission to find peace after war.

For years, you have spoken extensively about the need for a more robust civil service program in the country. I cannot think of a greater civil service than serving in the military, especially in a time of war. For eight years, soldiers have sacrificed their bodies, minds, and in the most tragic of cases, their lives, to complete the mission. We have stared into the black abyss of war to see an inner reflection of triumph and tragedy. There are pieces of us, physical and otherwise, that are left on the battlefield forever. That is what we gave up for this nation. Now that the war in Iraq is coming to a close, it's time to end the recalls immediately. Every soldier in the military stands ready to report, mobilize and deploy in any corner of the world in 96 hours or less. The abrupt cancellation of the Presidential Reserve Call Up Authority and subsequent orders would seem effortless in comparison to what soldiers stand ready for each and every day.

"Keeping faith with those who serve must always be a core American value and a cornerstone of American patriotism. Because America's commitment to its servicemen and women begins at enlistment, and it must never end."

The words above should look familiar. You said them on the presidential campaign trail as my unit conducted combat patrols in the fifteenth month of our tour in Iraq. It must be realized that above all else, the American soldier is the most valuable thing this country has to offer. The bodies, minds and lives of our fighting men and women cannot be taken for granted. There is too much at stake. Ending the involuntary recalls is a step in the right direction to repair the ties that bind the military to the citizens they stand to protect. You were Steve Lewey's senator in the great state of Illinois, and you are now his President. You must keep the faith with him and the many thousands of veterans that hold recall orders in their hand and uncertainty in their hearts. For more than two hundred years, soldiers have fought to protect this land. Now it is time to ask you, Mr. President, to fulfill your commitment to end recalls and put veterans back onto their long journey to peace and prosperity.

No, I didn't win the lottery. BTW, I still think it is rigged against me. One would believe that as much as I have played I would have won at least a couple of dollars, huh? I've read the second book in Brent Weeks' new trilogy and I am excited that I have found a new author to read. The first two installments of Weeks' Night Angel trilogy are great reads. The characters are dynamic and complex. Their motivations fuel the movement of the story and oh, what a story it is! For those who enjoy action as well as well defined characters, please pick up the first book in the trilogy. You may see a picture of the cover in a previous post. Also, Weeks and his publishers are using the last three months of the year in order to complete the trilogy. What an inspired concept. A complete new trilogy may be read from first book to conclusion within a three month time frame. I will tell you, If you are a fan of fantasy/SF just take a chance on Brent Weeks. You will not be disappointed.

Anyway, you guys and girls need to check out a new author that I found last week. His name is Brent Weeks. Even though some of you all may not be into that sort of novel, give him a try. He's a very good writer with a clever story. BTW, he even admits in an interview he likes to keep the reader guessing, a la George R. R. Martin, whether this character or that one will be eliminated or seriously hurt next. Several times during the novel, I was nervous about characters that I liked kicking the bucket. He keeps you guessing. The name of the book is The Way of Shadows available now in stores. BTW, the second and third books will be released within one month of each other. Unlike other authors out there who may take years to publish several books in a series. Great read Mr. Weeks. I'll keep on reading your stuff! I'm going to link his web page to the blog, if you're interested.

Hurricane Season

I recently went through hurricane Gustav and I can honestly tell you, 'It sucks a bunch!' I've grown up with the threat of these storms for years. Until recently, I did not take them too seriously. That asshole, Gustav, scared the shit out of me.

I live in a small subdivision out in Ascension Parish. My power went out around 7AM the morning of the storm and did not come back on for about 9 1/2 days. I know that is not nearly as long as some other hurricane victims, but the old adage is spot-on, 'you don't know what ya got till it's gone.' Man, do I rely on electricity or what? My youngest daughter had a mild asthma attack the night of the storm while trying to sleep next to us. That scared me almost as much as the storm. You see, if the medicine doesn't work, where do you bring them? The hospital was probably overwhelmed (sp?) so we were on our own. Thankfully, Mrs. Purple Tiger was on the ball pre-Gustav to get refills on all the medication. So, everything turned out OK that night.

I quickly decided that my wife and kids did not need to face the days without any electricity. I packed them up on Tuesday evening and brought them to my mother-in-law's house in Houston. I left the next morning so I could come back to work. I can honestly tell you that leaving them in Houston was the most difficult thing I had to do. I really did not want to leave, but I thought there were guys at the plant who needed to be relieved and go home themselves.

I do have some pictures from Gustav and it's aftermath locally, and I'll post them as soon as I get off my lazy butt to put them on my computer.

BTW, thanks for coming to visit Colleen. It's nice to see someone comes over once and awhile.

I went to see the new Batman flick today with my wife and let me say without any hyperbole, "This is probably the best movie I've ever seen!"

I know you are saying, "C'mon Purple, isn't that a little extreme?"

In a word. . . NO!

Heath Ledger's performance is one that I'll remember for a long time. That character was one of the most twisted individuals that I have ever seen on screen. Before you go see this movie, know one thing. This movie is NOT for kids. This film has a message and sub-text oozes from the screen. If you liked Batman Begins, please do yourself a favor and pay the money to see this on the big screen.

New Direction. . .Possibly

If any of you have read my past postings, you know about my decision to return to school and get a masters degree. I have finally started my second course in my curriculum.

After accounting finally got my reimbursement information correct.

Anyhoo, my company is searching for an Environmetal Engineer for our facility. Even though the position is not actually a safety position, I have submitted my name for consideration for this job. I really do not think I'll get any serious consideration for the job, but I felt that I had to give it a shot. After searching the 'safety' jobs on monster and careerbuilder, I have noticed that if one does not have supervisory experience or environmental experience, it will be difficult for me to receive the pay that will keep me and my family on the same standard of living we are accustomed to.

If you don't know, process technicians in the petro-chemical industry make very good money. On the other hand, safety professionals and environmental technicians also make decent salaries. Not to mention that they do not have to work shift work like I currently do.

If you have never worked shift-work in your career, try not to, if you can help it. I have noticed that my overall health is not nearly as good as it was when I hired on here. I do realize that, over the years, my lack of exercise has contributed greatly to my 'lack of wellness.' Recently, I have begun to exercise more often, and I am eating better. It is so hard to eat well, when my control tech is such a good cook. Awesome Louisiana food, man. There is nothing like it. This man is the bane of my existence here at the plant.

Fatigue is a factor that shift workers have to deal with constantly. Working three straight 12 hour nights, then getting a 1/2 day off, then returning to work on a Tuesday morning at 430AM is really tough. On the body as well as the home life. I really don't know how some of these guys will drive for 1 1/2 hours to get to work every day. Can you imagine, getting up at 3 AM in the morning to get to work at 430 AM. Then, turning around and leaving around 445 in the afternoon and not getting home until around 615. That has to take a toll.

I'm trying to get out of this shift work life any way possible. I don't know if the environmental field is worth the shot, but I've already submitted my name. I'm just hoping that I can keep sane until I finish my masters. I can't wait until the day that I will have that degree and seriously search for a job with my new career in mind. Here's to early 2010, my goal for graduation.

My employer offers a tuition reimbursement program for employees who wish to continue their education. I decided to go back to school to get a Masters of Science in Occupational Safety and Health. In other words, I want to become a 'safety man.'

Well, what is supposed to transpire, is that I submit my grades and an invoice for the payment for the class. When I attended Southeastern Louisiana University, I would send in the invoice printed off of the student access site. I always was paid within a week. Evidently, there is some chick in Dallas who seems to have a bug up her ass. I sent a pdf copy of my invoice, which I received fro CSU, to the Accounting Department in Dallas. I get an email from her stating that she needs an original receipt or invoice. WTF? I sent the lady what CSU sent me. That wasn't good enough. Anyway, I called CSU for an original invoice and the nice lady said she had it on the way to my house. A couple of days later, I get an envelope in the mail from CSU. It is the wrong invoice! Now, I have to call them again and get them to send me another invoice, so some Trick in Dallas can get an original. This process has gone on for over two weeks. All the while, I can't register for another class until I get reimbursed. Freakin' Skank.

And still married! How 'bout that. Let me tell you though, I was bored stiff in the evenings. The guy that I went with was 4 for 4 on nightly companionship while we were attending. There was a respiratory therapist FOCUS convention going on while we were there. He met some young ladies from there and hooked-up.

Let me ask you a question. Is it just me. . . or is it particularly disturbing to see a respiratory therapist in the smoke bin outside the convention hall puffing away? I am the last one to judge a person on his/her habits, but that just seemed to me to be, just, wrong.

P. S. I really was a good boy while in Nashville! I learned a lot, as well.

Let me tell you a little story:

There once was a guy named, shall we say, 'yellow tiger', who was in outside sales about 9 years ago. This dude had just begun dating a very attractive young lady named, 'attractive young lady.' Let's just call her AYL for short. Well YT goes on a training trip to the big D-town in Texas. I was to be there for about a week learning the 'ins and outs' of the corporate way of doing things.

Well, one night, the head instructor and the Managing Partner for the Dallas office decided he wanted to take us out to eat dinner, their treat. I think, this is cool. I call the newly aquired girlfriend named AYL and said we would be going out to eat and woud be calling her back when I returned to the hotel. Well, those of you who have travelled for work could probably guess what happened next. The two bosses decided they wanted to go to one of Dallas' fine establishments that happen to have 'nekid' women all over the place. When I say, 'nekid,' I mean just that. NEKID!!!!

I lost track of time while trying not to get in trouble in this fine establishment. The guy who attended the training with me, ended up at the hotel before me and answered the phone in the room. Lo and Behold, the AYL was trying to reach me for some nonsensical reason and was thouroughly PISSED when I finally called her back.

I'm thinking to myself, 'time for damage control.' I told her that we went out and I just got back, leaving out the fact that we were at one of Dallas' fine entertainment establishments. Let me tell you, AYL was not a happy camper with me at the time. Also, I did not do anything while inside this fine establishment that would have been construed as cheating. Period!!! I was only entertained visually, if you know what I mean. BTW, the Managing Partner paid in full for the nights festivities. None to the proceeds came out of my bank account. Really, I had no choice, did I?

Anyway, she got over it and that was the last time that I have been out of town for any type of work trip. Now, that I am at a different company and I have a completely different job function, I don't have the opportunity to make these business trips that I used to when I was in outside sales. An opportunity has arisen for me to go to a convention away from home. The better-half is not very keen on the idea of me going out of town. She believes there will be a rehash of the last incident.

Let me also fill you in on the fact that the guy that I am attending the conference with is recently divorced. This combination is a recipe for disaster. I really don't want to go out, because we are saving money to pay off stuff early, but I feel like the asshole who won't loosen up.

I love my wife tremendously, and she puts up with my stupid shit all of the time. But this situation is a no win for me. Therefore, I am soooo . . . . FUCKED!

Moving Forward

I know that I have been MIA for awhile now. I just have too many irons in the fire right now to keep up with everything. I have finally started my journey towards a masters degree. I am currently taking a MS level Safety and Accident Prevention course. I am excited about the challenge but also very wary about how difficult the next two years are going to be on myself as well as my family. It will take a full commitment from myself and my wife for me to be successful with this degree program. I did not realize how difficult the process was going to be. But it wouldn't be a real masters degree if it was easy.

BTW, if anyone reading this is looking for an alternative to University of Phoenix, take a look at Columbia Southern University. Their website is www.columbiasouthern.edu They have quite a few degree programs available online. I can tell you that this school is no "fly by night" operation. I did some research before I decided to give them a try. Trust me, I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the degree choices offered.

As I have time and as I get bored, I'll get back to the lazy you tubage '80s junk that I used to listen to.

Anyway, I have debated on which music video I wanted to post. I had two videos that I was going back and forth on. Well, I said, "Self. . . WTF? Why not post both of them?" So here ya go. . .

Decisions, Decisions

I know you are saying to yourself, "Does this guy ever do anything at work?" I can answer that particular question with a huge YES. Here at work we are operating at rates that are optimum and allow the process not to strain too much. This actually leads to more downtime than normal when the company decides, in all of it's collective wisdom, to push our feed rates to the edge. When the upper limit is pushed, all types of things can go wrong. (pumps failing, vaporizers fouling, leaks, corrosion etc.) The company pays us not for what we do, but for what we might have to do. Those of you who have worked with hazardous chemicals know what I mean when I say that. That being said, it makes me wonder what the hell am I doing?

I went to college and received a Bachelors of Arts in Political Science. I had all of these plans to attend law school at LSU and be well on my way to being wealthy and rich. Well, the teaching bug bit me late in my career at LSU. Yes, I became an uncertified teacher after I graduated. After one year as a 'long term substitute' in the school district that I grew up in, I was offered a teaching job at a small Catholic high school in Donaldsonville, Louisiana. I can honestly tell you that the years from 95-98 teaching at Ascension Catholic High School were the most challenging yet enjoyable in my working life. Reality set in early 1998 and had to offer my resignation to the school. Finances forced me to leave a job that I liked. The entire time that I was teaching there, I never made more than $18,500 for a single year. I was not able to complete school to become a certified teacher. This forced me to leave the teaching profession, possibly forever.

This all brings me to the job that I have now. We are VERY well compensated for what we do here at the plant. I now realize that I want to do more. I don't want to work shift work for the rest of my life. Don't get me wrong, I like the people that I work with and they are immensely entertaining, but I am finding that I want something else. I do have a plan, however. The company that I work for has a tuition reimbursement program for employees. I can attend classes, and if justified, be reimbursed for the cost of the tuition and fees.

I have decided that I am going to pursue a Masters of Science in Occupational Safety Health and Environment. This degree program is extremely close to what I do now. It is, however, more manegorial in nature. (Is that actually a word? It's almost midnight round time, I can't bring myself to actually look it up.) I am excited about the opportunities this could provide for myself and my family. Not the least being that I could get off of shift work and be with my family for Christmas every year. The two years it will take to get the degree is not going to be easy, but my wife is on board and is extremely supportive of the decision.

The fact that the safety field will be short a few thousand professionals by the year 2012 doesn't hurt either.

Rambling

While at work tonight, I have been visiting some other blogs out there and realized that I might need to broaden the scope of my writing. My most intense interest, of course, is LSU football. Now that I have been posting for a few months now, I think that there are other aspects of my life that might be 'blog worthy.'

You see, when I was in high school and attending college, I considered myself a good writer. I look back to some of the essays that I have written I say to myself, "How did I ever write this well?" I know that my writing is somewhat disjointed with some run-on sentences thrown in for good measure. Ever since I graduated college, I never put any serious effort into writing, but I remember how it used to be so enjoyable and extremely easy for me. How do I get that back? Where do I go? How do I start? What should I write about?

I know that I have some interesting ideas floating around inside my mind, I just don't have any clue about how to access them. Maybe some 'soul searching' is in order. I have always heard that writing is a skill that dulls with disuse. Maybe this online journal can be the whetstone that sharpens one of the few skills that I was always proud of. I just hope that I haven't lost what I used to have.

I think I am going to start a new series on the blog. This past weekend while at work one of my co-workers and I were throwing out some of the groups from the '80s we used to listen to. Crown Induced Stupor

This past weekend was possibly one of the most enjoyable times I've had this year. My wife and I made the road trip to Tuscaloosa, Alabama for the annual meeting between the two SEC schools. Both of my brothers-in-law with their better halves were there as well. It turned out to be a very enjoyable weekend. We are trying to make plans to attend the Auburn/LSU contest next year to possibly top this experience.

I have to give MAJOR props to my wife who worked her ASS off to make this trip happen. While I had to work for almost two weeks straight before the trip, she did everything she could to ensure we were ready for this trip. From making sure the little purple tiger was all set for her soccer games on Saturday morning to purchasing extra LSU gear to help outfit my Florida brother-in-law's RV. I know she is paying for all the work with exhaustion this week.

Anyway, we began drinking the Crown shortly after my wife and I arrived on Friday about 1 P. M. My Florida brother was already there and set up in a lot across from the Tuscaloosa News building. I'm telling you, for $100 from Wednesday evening to Sunday morning, you can't get a better deal. It was managed by the Tuscaloosa Downtown Merchants Association. Check out their website if you ever go to Tuscaloosa for a game, if they have spots available take one, the people are great.

My Texas brother-in-law arrived shortly after 4 p. m. We had been drinking for a few hours by that time. Well, when he arrived J. heated up some brisket he had prepared earlier. We drank and socialized for a while when some older guys came up to see what was going on. They offered some seafood gumbo that they had cooked earlier that day. My wife was in heaven. She absolutely loves any type of gumbo and these guys knew what they were doing.

A couple of acquaintences of ours, Alabama fans were hanging out with us most of the day and I think they enjoyed themselves too. A little later came the time to go out. We were within walking distance from some bars on University. We ended up in one that had a country band as it's entertainment. I was pleasantly surprised with how good they were. I was so numb by that time that I don't remember the bar or the band that was playing, sorry. Remember, we never at any point after 1 stopped drinking the Crown, so we were pretty hammered by this time.

Next, comes the interesting time of the evening. Two seperate events had me thinking that I might actually have to call Ol' Richard Pittman (criminal defense attorney in Tuscaloosa) to keep me out of trouble in Tuscaloosa. The first incident included my wife who confronted an extremely drunk LSU fan who was hanging all over a young lady in the bar. She noticed that this guy was groping and dancing on this girl apparently who did not know how to tell this guy to stop. Well, Mrs. Purple Tiger has no patience for this foolishness and proceeded to tell the drunken slob to get off the girl and get lost. She took hold of the girl and placed her in front of us out of the way of the groping arms of mr. drunk. He looked like he wanted to make an issue of it briefly. He thought better of it and stumbled away. We dodged that bullet, because I would have had to step in front of mr. drunk if he had made any move toward my wife. Being kicked out or arrested pre-game night would have sucked immensely.

Next, we had an incident involving my Florida brother-in-law's wife. She was hanging out in her own little available space when mr. tall drunk guy shows up. J. said that this guy seemed to know every Bammer in our vicinity. Well, he starts dancing and promptly begins to elbow and hit her. She elbows him right back. Needless to say, he did not enjoy this too much. He turns around and starts to yell at her. Well, brother-in-law turns around behind him and asks Bammer friend Shane if he has his back to make sure no one sucker punches him in the event of a brawl. Tami was able to handle her own business and mr. tall drunk guy, evidently intimidated by Tami's demeanor, backs down and leaves her alone. My wife and I left shortly after these two incidents knowing that the next day was going to be long and hard. We got back to the RV and went to sleep. So ends our first day of the Tuscaloosa trip.

Since this was such a long post, I'll post gameday later.

Pre-Road Trip Planning Stage

My wife and I are going to Tuscaloosa this weekend without tickets. We are not planning to try to acquire any, either. You see, both of her brothers, one who lives in Orlando and the other lives in Houston, will be there this weekend. It is a very rare occasion that there is an opportunity for these two and my wife to hang out together. So, we make the road trip. I am actually really looking forward to the trip and the game. I think it is going to be a blast to actually go into a bar in another team's hometown and OWN the place. I will tell you something, the Crown Royal: Special Reserve will be tapped early and often during Saturday.

If anyone reading this is going to Tuscaloosa, just shoot me an email. If we are in the area of where you are tailgating, I'd like to drop by and say hello.

I have to work Wednesday and Thursday, but we are leaving after I get home from work and do the "Triple-S" we will be hitting the road. I know that the trip is only about 5 1/2 hours, but the little lady and I hardly ever get any time alone. So we'll prolly get a room somewhere Thursday night and have some quality 'alone time' if you get my drift. Anyway, have a great weekend. Hopefully, I'll have some interesting and humorous anecdotes to relate when we return.

I was nervous about that Kentucky game before it ever kicked off. If you have read any of my posts from the beginning of the season, you'll notice that I thought that the Tigers would probably drop one possibly two games this season. This doesn't mean that I did not fall for the 'werewolf with a chainsaw penis' talk on one of my favorite sports blogs. I was buying into it just like a lot of the other Tiger fans out there. However, I did have a sinking feeling in my stomach that began with the Tulane game. Yes, we did come back to beat Florida, but the previously hidden flaws were continuously being exposed in our offense and defense. Well, Ky. took every advantage of this at every opportunity. Don't get me wrong, I believe Ky. deserved to win that contest, but we did give them a lot of the rope in which to hang us with.

That being said, I truthfully believe that this loss came at an opportune time for the Tigers. I think this loss could actually galvanize the team and motivate them for the rest of the season. They have tasted what success and defeat have to offer and maybe success is more to their liking. I think the guys will come out fighting hard and fast Saturday night. I hope to get a couple of tickets for my wife and myself, but if it doesn't work out we'll just tailgate and watch the game at the house on my HD TV.

Singin' in the Rain

All I can say about yesterday is that I'm glad it's over. The Tigers played a decent game, but I don't think the commentators wanted LSU to win that game. Through the entire game these guys were saying, "Watch out for 'the ol' ball coach, because he'll get you somehow." That, of course, is not a direct quote, but you get the point. It sounded to me that these guys wanted South Carolina to pull this game out. The references to Spurrier's team still hanging around while they sneak up on teams and beating them, were really causing me to drink more crown than I had planned.

I think the very wet and soggy conditions hampered LSU a little bit. They did not pass as much as I would have thought they would. But that could have something to do with the receivers having the dropsies. Well, at least we have this play to cheer about:

Probably a Complete Game

I know. . . I know. The title is somewhat of an understatement. Saturday night's game was perhaps the most enjoyable game I have ever attended at LSU. I've been to some pretty fun games, such as: LSU defeating #1 Fla at home, The earthquake game (while in high-school), the overtime win over Tennessee at home, among others. This one, however, I enjoyed from the time I arrived at the tailgate spot to the ending whistle in the fourth quarter.

I don't think the V-Tech fans and players know what hit them during this contest. From beginning to end, the Tigers were ready to play and play they did. I said in an earlier post that I would reserve judgement on the offense for later. Well, I've reached my decision. If they play half as well for the rest of the season, I don't think we will ever be 'out' of any game this year. I still am extremely hesitant to jump on the 12-0 bandwagon. I really want to, but I don't want to jinx the whole deal. Needless to say, I was very impressed. I am looking forward to watching this team for the rest of the season. Great job guys, keep it up!

Now for the most excruciating thing about the whole day. THE TRAFFIC AFTER THE GAME. Need I say more? If anyone reading this has been to an LSU football game, they have just an inkling of what my wife and I experienced after the game. This post-game exodus was unlike any other game that we have attended in years. I don't exactly know what time the game ended, but we did not get out of the parking lot (field) on river road close to the vet school until 2:45 AM. We waited in the parking lot for an entire hour before my wife convinced me to go in a different direction. Let me explain. THE FREAKIN' CAR DID NOT MOVE ONE INCH IN AN HOUR!!!!!!!! Don't get me wrong, I expect traffic after football games. There is no excuse for the fact that it took my wife, my step-daughter and I almost three hours to get home. Anyway that is all for the ranting for now.

I honestly thought LSU's offense would come out looking a little better than what they showed us last night. I don't believe we will have any issues with the defense, but we cannot rely on the defense to win us the big games. The offense needs to find out what is wrong and fix it quick. I'm not in panic mode, but we definately do not deserve the #2 ranking right now. Conventional wisdom says a team improves more in between it's first game and second one than at any time during the season. I hope we saw some jitters get banished last night. I don't want to be reading the blogs for the rest of the season with them saying, "Those corndogs are extremely overrated!"

Until we get through our first real test in V Tech, I will withold the judgement on the offense. I think the running backs namely Williams and Scott looked like they were ready to play some ball. I think as the season goes on, Flynn and the receivers will get in a rythm that will allow us to move the ball down the field. I just hope our offensive line can get it's act together, because without them playing well, we will be living through a long football season.

Oh, Happy Day! ! ! ! Footbaw is almost here! I am so pumped that LSU plays Thursday night on ESPN. I do not have to work Thursday, so I can spend all day preparing for the season opener. . .

Oh, Crap ! The little one's first soccer practice is Thursday evening at 6:00 P.M. Good thing that the coach likes to limit practice to about 1 hour. Otherwise, the little one would be skipping out of practice early so daddy can catch the kickoff for the 2007 Tiger Football Season! I'm just kidding, I probably wouldn't pull her from practice early. I'd be antsy the whole time though.

Anyway, I don't think I've looked forward to a football season nearly as much as this year. My wife is almost as excited about the season as I am.

Getting Closer

Dude,

You have no idea how bad I am wanting some college football. I don't care if it is two directional schools battling it out for pork rinds, but man, I need some football. Fortunately, I have less than two weeks left for the LSU and Miss. State game.

I am really excited about this season, like everyone else in the college football community. I am, however a little more realistic about LSU's projected record. Don't get me wrong, I would love to see the Tigers go 12-0, go win the SEC Championship Game, go to New Orleans again and smack the ever living dog-mess out of any team that shows up for that game. I don't think it is going to happen that way. I believe there are two games out somewhere in the season that the Tigers are going to play like poo-poo and not be able to escape with a win. I think that their final record will end up another 10-2 season (not bad BTW). I just want Miles to continue building on the success that Saban helped build at LSU. Folks, we are in a 'Golden Age' of LSU football. We need to enjoy the wins while we can. One day, hopefully not soon, we will be in the middle of the pack in the SEC, with occasional impressive seasons. Let's not get bent out of shape if we don't go 12-0 in the regular season this year. Who knows, maybe it'll all work out the way we would like, but I'm just out for a solid performance by the Tigers this year.

Memo to the Hokies: You should have come to Tiger Stadium last time you were scheduled to. I think you had a better shot at beating the Tigers in that year. Man, ESPN gave the Tiger faithful 1 extra hour to 'prepare' for the game since kick-off is not until 8:15 P.M. on Sep. 8. I know I'll be putting that extra hour to good use!

Please don't judge me, but I am guilty of watching Big Brother on t.v. I also check out the live feed updates online while I am at work sometimes.

While I was browsing through the update boards last night I witnessed something that I did not think I would ever see. One of the contestants who calls himself Evil Dick, went off on a tirade that rivaled some of the most viscious and filth-laden monologues that I have witnessed here at work.

Go with God Marquise

Marquise Hill, former LSU defensive end and current New England Patriot, died in a tragic accident on Lake Pontchatrain this weekend. I just want to send out my prayers to his family and friends.

What should have been a fun-filled weekend turned tragic when Hill and some friends were riding jet-skis on the lake. Hill and a female friend were thrown off the craft and they were not wearing life vests. The friend credits Hill with saving her life. He disappeared shortly after the girl was able to hold onto a nearby water pylon.

I will terribbly miss this gentleman. He was a great player and a stand-up representative for both LSU and his current New England team.

How I Loathe Car Accidents

AAARRRRGHHHH! (This is by no means an endorsement of the Pirates movie that came out today! I do want to see it though.)

I was about to post a silly little picture of a toy car crash on this article and my computer at work absolutely will not let me. I get 'error on page' message at the bottom of the browser. Well, I guess you guys will have to do without the images on the blog until I can edit them from home.

Anyway, I was at work Wednesday sucking up some much needed overtime, when I receive a call from my better half at around 330 P.M. She tells me, "Another lady hit me in the turning lane by the Interstate!"

Of course being the loving husband I am I ask, "Are you O.K.?"

She replies shakily, "Yeah, but I can't get home to the girls because the police were just called."

Even though we are in a small outage at work with plenty of maintenance still going on, I have to pick up and go home. The kids were fine, but mom was very upset when she arrived home.

Let me preface this little anecdote by saying that I respect the police tremendously, and I know they have a very difficult job.

However, in this case, I think this guy really didn't want to start his shift with an accident report that did not have anyone hurt. He explained to the two parties involved in the accident that if he filled out an accident report, that it would go on both drivers records 'forever.' Next, he asked if both ladies would like one done. Well, both ladies were somewhat shaken and they replied 'no.' There was little damage to either car, but there was damage that needed to be repaired. He suggested that both parties take care of the repairs on their own without insurance involvement. Let me tell you, this accident was NOT my wife's fault and I AM NOT going to repair our car with our own money when someone else hits us.

The lady that hit my wife's car, I will tell you, is a very respectable person. She called her insurance company and admitted fault in the accident. If this woman would not have been a very scrupulous person, then we probably would be fighting insurance companies to repair our car.

I later found out that there is a way we could get a legal document from the city that would assist us if it came to litigation. I am happy to say that, at this moment, everything seems to be going O.K.

BTW, my wife is fine and the car is not that damaged. I am getting it repaired because it is only 2 years old and we are planning to keep it for a while.

Wednesday on the Bayou

I have been fighting this darn site for two weeks now. I don't know if it the computer system at work that won't let me update My Favorite Sites list. It sure is frustrating that I can't post any links to some of my favorite sites. See, I update this blog mostly when I work nights and weekends here at the plant. I generally have more time to post stuff at these times. When I am at home, I usually have other things to do and it slips my mind to try my computer at home.

I want to thank Kate for coming onto the site and posting a comment. Thanks, Kate for taking the time to come and look at the site. I will be visiting your site often to see what is going on in your little 'slice of heaven.' I know that I write about things you aren't generally interested in, but sometimes I might actually surprise you with a rare bit of wit.

BTW, Kate. The dance recital that I went to was my step-daughter 'C.' She did a great job. She is going to change dance schools next year, though. Her new school has a top-notch ballet teacher who is 'no-joke' and teaches ballet the way it is supposed to be taught. It doesn't hurt that the new school is run by a guy that works out here and his wife. It is a complete performing arts school, not just dance. Their 'Showcase' last week was pretty cool mixing the dance classes with some musical numbers. Great job, Larry with the showcase. We'll be sending C. and K. this summer to your summer 'mini-musical' camps. They are very excited about it.

Man, how can you get more classical than Degas' Ballerina? I bet you guys didn't think I had it in me, did ya?

Oh, I want to say hello to Shelby, who might be visiting sometime in the future. Now, I don't want anyone to hold it against him that he is a Crimson Tide fan. He is a pretty good fella that my brother-in-law introduced me to a few years ago. Shelby, I just wanted to give you a 'shout-out' and come by often. Dude, you know my email and keep writing and visiting the blog. If you see something interesting feel free to comment. I'll also want any scoop on your new coach as his career is disected at Alabama.

Man,

I had an awsome post that I was working on this morning. I got an alarm outside and went out to take care of it. I came back inside and. . . DAMMIT, the computer logged off before I could have it saved. Oh well, I guess sometime today, while dreading the upcoming dance recital tonight, I'll post something.

My Thoughts

I know it's been awhile since my last post, but I've been terribly busy around the homestead and at work. There are a few things that I need to rant about. So, get ready.

LSU Basketball. . . WTF? I thought that our team would be a tad bit better at this point in the season than this. Losing five straight SEC games does not a champion make. I didn't buy into the pre-season love-fest that some people gave the team, I just didn't think that this team would implode the way it has. All another team has to do is play a zone and LSU is screwed. With no consistant outside shooting to be had, mediocre teams are eating us for lunch. I hope Brady is working on a point guard for the future and maybe some outside shooters. LSU is in a world of trouble next year if something doesn't change. It is extremely hard to watch the Tigers play because of all the bonehead turnovers they have each game, a la 12 first half turnovers against Miss. State. Anytime we think they are back into a game, they commit a silly foul or turnover which digs them into a hole which they cannot emerge. I am really looking forward to a consistant team. They don't have to win every night, but please put a competitive team on the court. If this would happen, the PMAC would be a lot more seats filled for each home game.

LSU Football recruiting
I took a gander at Rivals.com web site this evening and was somewhat surprised. Two of the recruiting analysts have McKnight going to USC. I could be wrong, but wouldn't it be better for an athlete of his caliber to attend a school that he might make an imediate impact or playing time. If he comes to LSU I think there is a good possibility that he could play a good bit next season. With the type of offense that our new co-ordinator brings to Tiger Stadium, I think he would be a weapon that could immediately be utilized. By going to USC, there is a distinct possibility that he might not see the field until the 2008 season, if then. They have some great athletes over there and they can afford to stockpile him for a season. Maybe I've missed something, but LSU seems a better choice for him. If we don't get him, well, we just move on and kick the living crap out of everyone next year and show the nation what a great place LSU is to play.

The Saints
I am very proud of the way the Saints played football this year. This is the first time since I have been watching the Saints that I am very much looking forward to next year. During pre-season I was ready to watch the first few regular season games then go about my way for the rest of the NFL season. They hooked me! I was impressed with the way that this team never quit at any time during their games. In almost every loss of the season, including the NFC Championship Game, turnovers cost them dearly. They never quit though. That means a lot to me as a fan. If they can pick up a CB off of free agency and maybe draft a top notch LB, I think that is all it would take to lift up the defense to where they need to be. The Saints had a taste of success this year, I think it left them hungry for more. After all of these years, I am hearing "Who Dat?" again. That is music to my ears.

National Champions

Congratulations to Florida for winning the National Championship the other night. I tell you what, Florida skull-drug OSU throughout that entire game. The kickoff return for a touchdown at the beginning of the game was just a little tease for the Buckeyes. Florida completely own3d OSU during the game. Mr. 'sweater vest' Tressel looked completely lost during the entire broadcast. Again, Florida enjoy your National Championship. Great Job.

Sugar Bowl Aftermath

Man, was that trip to New Orleans great! Parking; no problem. Hotel; no problem. Food; no problem. Seats for game; no problem. LSU fan and ND fan next to us; Big Freaking Problem!

My wife and I arrived in the Superdome about 5:15, two hours before the game. We went in early because yours truly had to do #1 some kind of fierce. Anyway, two Irish fans from Bawston showed up shortly thereafter. The missus and I chatted rather pleasantly with these two hardcore Irish fans. Next, enter young, drunk, and obnoxious Tiger fan. I knew this was going to be a test of my patience from the get-go. For the next hour and a half I had to listen to 'Dude, Notre Dame Sucks and you guys need to play in a real conference.' about 20 times. Granted, I may believe the same thing, but diplomacy is a good thing when meeting people for the first time. Thus began the WWE Wednesday Night Smackdown in New Orleans.

No fight ever broke out, but it was pretty touch-and-go most of the game. The ND guy next to us was just as boisterous as the drunk Tiger fan in front of us. My wife was getting pissed, because I had to difuse several infamitory comments from both sides for the entire 3rd quarter. I wish that I would be eloquent enough to recapture the intense arguing, errrrr. . .debate for the first 3 quarters of the football game.

I do truly believe that Les Miles actually had a good game plan for this matchup. He actually gained some respect from me on this account. Last year, he had the team very prepared for that beat-down of Miami. And LSU's second half explosion on ND showed dude actually might have some coaching skills. Now, don't get me wrong. I am still not a huge Les Miles fan, but I am hoping he can win me completely over in the next few seasons. I want LSU to be a top level program year in and out. I hope he can do it.

I only have one real wish for next football season. I want to go to Tuscaloosa and beat the living dog mess out of the Crimson Tide. I will be there, tickets or no tickets. I have already taken vacation for that weekend.

And finally, JaMarcus, GOOD LUCK at the next level. I and many Tiger Fans out there appreciate everything you have accomplished here at LSU. We will definately miss you when you are gone!

Rose Bowl

Let me ask anyone reading this blog one question: If LSU was in the Rose Bowl, would ABC/ESPN be giving this game such coverage. I take it that ABC/ESPN is the Rose Bowl's 'chickin-head.'

These guys have been talking about this matchup with such reverence that it is making me extremely ill. Don't get me wrong, I am very much looking forward to watching this game. It's just they are giving National Championship coverage to a non-national championship BCS bowl game.

Man, where has '06 gone? I woke up this morning for work and was astounded that 2006 was dead and gone. I guess the fact that I worked so much is the reason that the year slipped away.

I was happy to see that Georgia was able to pull out the win against Virginia Tech the other night. And what about Kentucky. Thanks Kentucky, for representing the SEC well. I don't have any thanks to the Crimson Tide, though. Hey Alabama, maybe now you will be able to end this farce of a coaching search and hire someone.

Officially, Sugar Bowl Bound

When my wife and I found out that LSU was going to be in New Orleans for the Sugar Bowl she said, "We need to go!" I was pumped. After about a half of a second I became more realistic.

I said, "Honey, how are we going to get tickets without selling off our youngest child?"

She replied, "Look, I don't care how you get them, just do it!" "Within reason, of course," she added.

I approached several of my contacts for tickets that I received for past games. No luck. At work the next day I had an epiphany. I'll just go on ebay. Let me fill you in on a little secret. I have never bought or even bid on anything on ebay. Needless to say, I was going in blind, but I was going to give it a shot. During my lunch break, I decided to take a look at what was on auction at the time. It was about 23 minutes past the hour and 'lo and behold' there were a couple of tickets being auctioned off in the nosebleed endzone of the Super Dome. There were only 7 minutes left for bidding and the top bid was $405. I preface this next statement by saying I have NEVER paid that much for any sporting event and didn't think I ever would. Anyway, I put in a bid for $410 with my upper limit being $450. Well, with 1 minute left in the bidding I was still the high bidder. With 30 seconds left the top bid went straight to $450. I was thinking, "Aw Hell. This guy is going to out-bid me with a $455 offer." My computer chose this particular time to freeze up. After rebooting, I logged back in to ebay to find out that I was, in fact, the winning bidder for the tickets. Well, I called the missus and told her about the tickets. She screamed my ear off through the phone. She was very excited about the chance to go see the Tigers in New Orleans.

This is where it gets interesting. I paid the seller for the tickets and opted for the Fed Ex delivery option. By the way, make sure you check the sellers feedback before placing any bid requests. I bid on some sucky seats but what the heck, I'll be amoung friends, huh? Well here it is December 27th and no tickets. My wife is about to strangle me for not having the tickets in hand yet. I'm wondering how I am going to evade the potential explosion if these tickets do not arrive before we go visit her brother in Houston this weekend. Well, yesterday I get home from work at about 5 A.M. and go to sleep. When I wake up, I go to our mailbox and happen to look at teh front door.

At this moment, I have a "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" interlude moment when the heavens open up and all the cheesy music plays. My Fed Ex package has arrived while I was sleeping. I tear open the envelope and find out that the seller has upgraded me from the endzone to 30 yard line seats. Granted, we are still in the nosebleed sections, but I'll be able to see some action. My wife was happy and I avoided another trip to the doghouse.

I am stoked about the game. I am really looking forward to attending my third bowl game in a row. I'll be sporting my purple and gold with the rest of the Tiger Faithful and I hope to see all of you there!

It's been a long time since my last post and I'm sorry. Not that anyone reads this blog, but I'm sorry all the same.

There are less than two weeks 'til the Tigers lay a good ol' ass whippin on the Fighting Irish of Notre Dammit. I'll be in the Big Easy watching the Sugar Bowl play out on the 3rd. I hope to see all of the Tiger Faithful there in full force.

I am quite unsettled on Alabama's search for a head coach. What's the problem with them. You would think they had an idea of who would possibly accept the job before they fired their coach. Evidently not. Good luck on keeping any great recruits with that 'Charlie Foxtrot' in Tuscaloosa. I was looking forward to the road trip over there next year. If their AD doesn't get his shit together and hire a coach, they are going to lose out on prime recruiting. Auburn is eating this whole scenario up. They thought their coaching issues were serious several years ago but this circus is making them feel tons better for Tuberville.

Hey T'smack, what the hell happened to the website? I'm missing out on all of your wisdom of the Coaching Circus in Alabama. I've had to revert to EDSBS and Loser With Socks sites to get a chuckle. It was F'n Cold!

Last night was the first time that I was able to sit in the upper deck for an LSU home game. Actually, it was pretty cool. It's amazing how one can see plays develop from the line of scrimmage. When Williams rushed for his touchdown, I could see the lane before he hit the line. But DAMN it was cold! The wind kicked my ass all game long.

I was concerned the whole game about our defensive backfield. It seemed to me that they were out of position more than normal last night. They did come up with big turnovers when they needed them. Good Job guys.

I have to tell y'all about a little pre-game amusement while we were heading to the stadium. Let me preface this story by letting you know that we were with some friends that traveled from out of state to see the game. They are Crimson Tide fans. We were walking past Tureaud (sic) Hall when some chick decided to yell, "Bama Sucks!" Now let me tell you, these guys we were with are good natured fellas that were extremely good sports all day with the "Tiger Bait!" thing. Well, anyway, this chick decided to take this a little farther. She yelled the previously mentioned "Bama Sucks!" Well, she wasn't ready for the "Well yeah but I see that you swallow!" reply from one of my out of town friends. I knew that she was pissed, but I thought that would be the end of it. We had walked all the way to the design building and she finally caught up to us. She started screaming and hollering that what my friend said insulted her. Next, some dude came from behind us and screamed that she deserved an apology. At this precise moment, the chick noticed that an LSU fan was holding one side of our ice-chest. I could see the wheels turning in her head. She couldn't grasp the concept of Bama fan and LSU fan hanging out and drinking with one another. She was dumbfounded! Of course this is an understatement, but I'm giving her the benefit of the doubt because of her inebriated state. She stuttered something incoherent and said, "We're cool" and just left.

Just an observation here, the vast majority of the Tiger Fans we encountered Saturday were great and had a great time. However, scenes like this are just too amusing to pass up. That girl ought to have a sign.

It is amazing how pissed Bama Fan is at their coach. I was sitting in the upper deck surrounded by Bama's faithful. They are crawling all over Shula about their team's performance. I tell you that the majority of them were screaming bloody hell at Shula and his running back Darby. They are sick. I also found out that many Bama fans sold their LSU tickets after the loss to Miss. State. Man, they were HARSH!

Anyway, did I mention that it was F'n COLD!

Happy to be Wrong

Boy, am I happy that my gut feeling was wrong about Saturday! But the 2nd half was like a roller coaster ride. The ending was a happy one though. After about 5 beers in the 2nd half alone, I was feeling a rather nice buzz. It just got better when the Tigers scored with 9 seconds left in the game.

I was kind of bummed that 'Bama lost to State. I was hoping they would win convincingly, so that the game Saturday would be more significant. I do have tickets and will probably be the only fan in a yellow shirt in the middle of all those 'Bama faithful. Thanks Jeff for the tickets, by the way.

By gametime, my Crown Royal Special Reserve bottle will be very empty and I will be feeling little or no pain. I can't act up too much because my better half will be attending the game with me. I hope to see all of y'all on campus Saturday. If anyone has any interesting tailgating options on Saturday, please let me know. I would really like to meet anyone who follows the Tigers and raise a toast to fellow Tiger Fans!

It's Saturday in Vol Country

I don't know what to think about Saturday's game against the Vols. My gut tells me that the same team that showed up at Auburn and Florida is probably the one that will show up in Tenn. My heart wants the Tigers to show the rest of the nation what they are truly capable of. You see, I'm torn.

I am having a difficult time with the idea that LSU's best win happens to be against ULL. WTF? After Saturday, LSU could turn out to be the most under-achieving an overrated team in the country. The lackluster offensive production in the last two road games is enough to give the most rabid Tiger fan pause. Will they kick it into high gear, or will the same team that dropped the two previous CBS games show up? I truly don't know. I hope after I return from the little Purple Tiger's soccer games Saturday, that I will be pleasantly surprised. I couldn't think of a better way to finish this crappy week, than with a quality win in Tennessee.

If Les Miles ever wants to catch a break in Baton Rouge, then he had better have his team ready to play in front of 100,000 Rocky Tops Saturday. I have been trying to give the man the benefit of the doubt this season, but he makes it extremely hard to feel good about the coaching this season.

Memo to Les: At this point your team has nothing to lose and everything to prove. Have the tigers ready to play and get your in-game adjustments right on Saturday or you'll see some very ugly things down the pike. After 'Little Nicky,' Tiger fans are not as forgiving for failure. We have come a long way since DiNardo. We do not, I repeat DO NOT want to go back to the days of Hallman and DiNardo. I personally like to be in the top ten every season. I don't want to go to future LSU games and see the stadium 3/4 full. I want 92,000 screaming fans in the stadium every Saturday. This will not happen if the Tigers continue to 'lay eggs' against quality teams.

My Thoughts

I was driving home from work yesterday when I heard an amazing event in the works; USC was losing. The score was 33-10 in favor of the Beavers. I was thinking to myself, "Are they really going to lose to them, or will it be another sqeaker for the Trojenz?" Needless to say, USC almost, and I stress the almost here, pulled another win out of their collective asses. Now, I'm not one of the USC haters here, one of my good friends is an alum of USC. I am thouroughly sick of the complete hand-job the media has been giving USC this year. Before Cal was mauled by Tennessee in the first game of the year, I thought that Cal would be the only team in the Pac-10 that could play with USC. I see now that I was wrong. If USC doesn't watch out it could feasibly lose two more games. I do know that they play Cal and Notre Dammit at home, but the way they get behind early in their games this season, it could lead to a possible situation that they could have three losses. I was disgusted after the loss Saturday. If I would have been at my own house, I probably would have broken several remote controls. I'm not a fan who likes to criticize coaching, but WTF? Why are we trying to run the ball when we are sixteen points behind in the second half? I hope the Tigers can regroup and play well for the rest of the season.

BTW, the picture is of my brother-in-law's '65 mustangs that he has. He is trying to sell the black coupe. He went out and bought the fastback before he could unload the coupe. I just didn't have anything worth publishing, and I still don't. I just thought I needed to post something.

Game Day

I must work today for LSU's home game against Miss. State. I do, however, have a plan to see the game. I woke up this morning at about 350 A. M. and went to Wal-Mart to buy an adapter for my small hand-held TV. I will get to see the game. I know it is just State, but I don't like to miss any game. I'll be looking forward the whipping the Tigers are going to give the Bulldogs today.

On a side note. I did get tickets to the Alabama game this week. I was able to secure the tickets from an unlikely source. . . the Alabama Athletic Department. Mrs. Purple Tiger and I will be in the middle of the Crimson Tide faithful in Death Valley. Not my ideal situation, but I take the tickets as I can get them until I am able to somehow acquire season tickets. (long shot, I know)

My brother-in-law is from here and now lives in Orlando. His best friend there is an Alabama Alum and they attend the 'Bama and LSU contest every year. Somehow, he was able to get tickets for my wife and I for the game in Tiger Stadium. This is the second or third time he has been able to get tickets for an LSU game for me. I even had tickets to the Florida game in The Swamp if I had been able to make the trip. I am extremely grateful to him for all he has done to feed my LSU football fix. THANKS JEFF!

Night Fright

I was making my midnight round in the unit, when lo and behold. . .a racoon. Let me tell you something, when one of these critters is agitated, you do not want to be close to it.

I was walking around one of our towers on the second deck logging my readings. After turning around writing down my pressure on one of the vessels, the healthiest racoon I have ever seen, was right in front of me about 2 feet away. It was not happy to see me there. It scared the living hell out of me. You don't expect anything up there to jump out at you at 12 in the morning. When I started walking away he slowly followed me for about 5 feet, then turned around and went under one of the supports of the tower that I walked by. This is the first time in my 5 years here that I have seen anything like this in the structure.

Well, the smartest thing Tulane did all night was not let their starting QB back in the game. I'm sure he needs a few Aleve after this sack by Dorsey. I think I'll take a 49-7 score. I'm sure Miss. State is REALLY looking forward to coming into Tiger Stadium next weekend.

Luckily, the organizers of the league thougt it would be a good idea to play on Sundays this fall to not interfere with LSU Football. WTF

What an AMAZING country we live in. What other nation in the world would let an hostile foreign head of state into their country and absolutely trash the country's leader? Hell, I know this has nothing to do with LSU Football, but WTF?

To top it off, Chavez goes to a church in Harlem the next day and continues to rant and rave about the 'devil' to applause. Wait. . .Did I miss something? I can tell you one thing, I used to like Danny Glover, but I wish that bullet in Lethal Weapon #whatever, would have ended his spot in that particular franchise.

Memo to Chavez: Get back to your country and fix your own country and stop spewing your illogical and insane rhetoric here!

Aw Hell. . .

After watching the first half of the LSU/Auburn game at my parents' house I made my way, somewhat comfortable, to work. LSU and Auburn were in the midst of a SEC battle and I had to miss the second half on TV. Auburn's only scoring drive left me feeling nervous but confident that there was time left in the game for LSU to put something together.

Oh, but it was not meant to be. After a penalty that gave Auburn a first down on a 3rd and 29, I had a sinking feeling in my gut. The Tigers stopped Auburn a few plays later, but with precious time coming off the clock. LSU had their chances, however, Auburn's defense kept them from the end zone.

The penalties that were called on the two last drives of each team seemed to contribute to the outcome of the game. It doesn't mean that the pass interference call on the interception or the overturn of the alleged pass interferene call lost the game. If Russell wouldn't have taken the sack on the last drive with time running off the clock, LSU might have had enough time to run one more play from the 5 yard line with 15-20 seconds on the clock.

The loss was painful. Not only because it almost certainly keeps LSU out of the SEC Championship Game, but it made this night at work very long indeed.

LSU has 2 home games coming up before they have to travel to Florida to play a Gator team that pulled out a last quarter win at Tennessee. I have to revise my prediction of the Tigers' season. I originally thought that they would drop 2 of the 4 road games. I now think they could possibly run the table if the offense can put any running game together. I really believe that Auburn's defense is the toughest that LSU will see for the rest of the season. I know that the Tigers will bounce back. They must if they want even a chance to play for the Western Division title. I know that Auburn must lose two, but stranger things have happened. Not very likely though.

Look,

I'm the last one to complain about how someone prepares food in their own kitchen. On Monday of this week, one of the operators had a little 'surprise' in his boxed lunch from one of the trucks. Looking at the title of this post you can hazard a guess on what he found in his red beans after he had eaten half of the lunch. I have never seen lunch boxes disappear off of the table quicker than they did that day. Before, the other guys started eating they were kidding me about my frozen french bread pizzas that I put in the oven. Well, I had a full stomach while the others were left hungry for the rest of the afternoon.

The tech who found the little critter in his lunch proptly began calling the other control rooms to warn them about the incident. After that, he went out front to get his money back from the vendor. When he showed the guy the roach in the box, the guy had the nerve to ask him, "Do you want your money back?"

DUDE, What the HELL do you think ?!!???

The following day, the guard at the gate said there were no operation technicians eating from that particular truck. I wasn't too keen on that one anyway, but this little 'incident' sealed the deal for me.

I have asked a couple of guys to post any stories or anecdotes they hear while they are at work. So, if you see any others posting to this blog, it is with my permission. There are so many stories here that I need a lot of help to get them down.

By the way, the Tigers will win this weekend. . . The purple and gold ones that is.

Saturday Night in Death Valley

Don't let the title fool you. I didn't make it to the game Saturday night. I did, however, watch it on Tigervision.

Look, I know we were playing USL err. . . UL-Lafayette, but there couldn't be a better way to kick off the 2006 season. USL gets a good payday without having to travel to the Big-House, and their fans get to drive down I-10 to do some out-of-town drinking on the campus of LSU.

I believe JaMarcus Russell did look improved over last season. I am a little concerned about Justin Vincent. I thought I saw him limp off the field in the 1st half. If anyone knows anything please let me know. Alley Broussard finally got in the game and looked pretty good. I know it was against a tired and almost defeated USL defense, but I think it was a nice spot for him to get his game legs back after his injury last year.

I just read a blog from tigersmack.com and came away laughing. Evidently, there is a DUDE on the Ragin Cajun dance team. WHAT ?!!??? What the hell is that all about? The poster for the tigersmack blog said that the big screen in the stadium focused on him for the entire song. I don't know about you, but a guy on a college football dance team seems somewhat. . . wrong.

I'm looking forward to next week when the 'Cats come into Death Valley. I'll actually be there with the rest of the Tiger Faithful getting drunk, loud, and hopefully after getting laid. (sidenote: don't tell my wife that I'm going to try to hit on her Saturday)

By the way, the decision to eliminate "Tiger Rag" from the pregame because of student "vulgarity" is absolutely riduculous!

Midnight Ramblings

My weekend at work is almost over. It is around 1230 A.M. and I am waiting for relief to get here. Well, my relief will not arrive until about 5 in the morning. I still have about 4 1/2 hours left.

I am anxiously awaiting L.S.U. football season to begin. Right now, the way my schedule looks, I might be able to make it to a few games. I have tickets to the Arizona and Fresno State games. I am hoping to get tickets to the Alabama game. Yeah, I know. . . tickets to that one are extremely scarce. It won't keep me from trying to score some tickets. I went to Tuscaloosa last year and had a blast! My wife, brother-in-law, my wife's friend and myself went to Alabama to see L.S.U. defeat the Crimson Tide in their own house. By the way, the Alabama fans were great. This enabled us to have an enjoyable experience. I would like to make that trip again someday.

We are trying to get some tickets to the Florida/L.S.U. game in Gainesville this year. Right now, we are not having any luck. My wife's brother lives in Orlando and we will probably go to Gainesville, even if we do not have tickets. The bars and restaurants across from 'The Swamp' are a great place to see the game if you don't have tickets. We've been there before and had a pleasant trip. Hope to have another one this year.

I know I'm rambling, but what do you expect from someone updating their blog at almost 1 in the morning. I'll be back when I have something to say.

Beginning the Weekend

What a week it has been! We have been working out here all week, and here I am working nights all weekend. Don't get me wrong, I like the money but the heat will take all of your energy after a while.

Here is a quote from the venerable sensei here in my unit. Try to guess what he is talking about, "That was just a little baby. . . In a little while there's going to be a growed up 'm f' in the bathroom." I was moving from our control board portion of the control room to the eating area when I walked into a "wall" of foulness. He ran 2 people out of the area he was in. It didn't clear out for a few minutes.

I'll post later when there is more to say.

Honeywell Incident

I just read online about an incident at Honeywell's chemical plant in Baton Rouge. Evidently, they had a release of Hydroflouric Acid at one of their units. I find this pretty disturbing, because they had a fatality at this same facility as a result of HF.

I know how difficult it is to prevent releases and spills on a 24 hour operation. It seems that the leak was detected by a remote monitor as well as the operations personnel and a "deluge" system was activated to prevent any additional exposure to personnel and equipment. My hat is off to the operators at Honeywell for handling this potentially dangerous situation rather quickly.

I hope no one was exposed and stay safe guys!

This quote from one of my co-workers is the reason that I decided to begin this blog. There are many stories told in a chemical plant during the workday. I am going to share some with y'all. My feeling is that we all have stories to tell. Some of them, though, are more interesting than others. My goal is to share some of these stories with you. Granted, what I find interesting might not be what you enjoy. That's O.K. I just feel the need to relate anything that I hear or see at work so that anyone bored enough might be entertained for a few minutes.

I work 12 hour rotating shifts in a chemical facility in Louisiana.

I am an outside operator, which means most of my time is spent outside working on equipment, making rounds, assisting maintenance workers, and keeping management happy. Because we all know that when management is not happy, no one is happy.

Anyway, I'll be back to post as I can. I have to actuall go back to work now.
